DVOŘÁK: THEMES FROM THE NEW WORLD
In a sold-out evening concert on June 1st celebrating the New York Philharmonic’s New World Initiative, Antonín Dvořák’s Largo and instrumental variations on “Goin’ Home” played a major role. Also featured were the popular Humoresques plus the beloved Piano Quintet in A Major, all performed by outstanding musicians: The 51+ artists included:
• Melodia Women’s Choir in an all-female sung version of the Largo from Dvořák’s "New World" Symphony
• Juilliard's Traveling Sounds chamber music ensemble with the Piano Quintet in A Major
• Juilliard pianist/vocalist Ruobing Zhang playing selected Humoresques and singing “Goin Home
• Juilliard cellist Yu Yu Liu in a cello arrangement of “Goin’ Home”
• Young musicians from Juilliard with the first movement of Dvořák’s “American” String Quartet
• The Borough of Manhattan Community College Select Chorus in an original arrangement of“Goin’ Home” by Eunho Kim—the grand finale of a memorable evening
• Readings from Josef Kovařik’s Three Years with the Maestro: An American Remembers Antonín Dvořák by actor Vit Hořejš and Majda Kallab Whitaker of DAHA
Presented by the Dvořák American Heritage Association in collaboration with the New York Philharmonic “New World Initiative,” Czech Center New York, and the Consulate General of the Czech Republic.
