Professor Beckerman Receives Honorary Degree from Masaryk University
On October 13, 2022 Professor Michael Beckerman received an honorary doctorate degree in musicology from Masaryk University in Brno, adding to his numerous international awards and recognition. Professor Beckerman is Carroll and Milton Petrie Chair and Collegiate Professor of Music at New York University and Vice President of the Dvořák American Heritage Association.
Congratulations, Mike!
It is of interest to note that Czech composer Leoš Janáček was awarded the first honorary doctorate in the history of the university, in recognition of – among other things – Sonata 1. X. 1905, dedicated to the struggle for a Czech university in Brno, and a cantata composed specifically for the keystone laying ceremony at the new Faculty of Law building. Masaryk University was established in early 1919, soon after the founding of Czechoslovakia, with the support of Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk, First President of Czechoslovakia.
